The Science of Brewing Meets the Art of the Cocktail | June 1, 2013

Some purists in the beer industry might argue that beer is, in itself, a perfectly crafted cocktail of barley, yeast, hops, water, and usually other additives. Conversely, some mixologists might argue that the flavour profile of beer is not ideal and does not, in fact, have chemistry with spirits. We would like to explore the relationship between beer and spirits and invite you to join us for a night of beer mixology and creativity. Exclusively for VCBW we’ll feature a Deschutes Mirror Pond and Hendricks Gin cocktail as well as a Chimay Rouge cocktail that brings a twist to the ordinary Americano.

Savour one of the two craft beer cocktails and enjoy a tasting plate consisting of exceptional charcuterie and artisan cheeses. Since mixology is all about creativity and because we believe there is no better place than Raw Canvas to live it up, we’ll provide you with a ‘raw canvas’ that night as well. Come on out and meet the athletes from Vancouver Special Olympics Soccer Team – They are working hard this year to get ready for the Provincial Summer games July 11 – 14th.

Since the summer games are only held once every four years, this year, we are lucky to be able to be close to home in Langley. The team is representing Region 5 (Vancouver – North Vancouver – Sunshine Coast). They have been practicing hard – continuing to train and look forward to great competition.

We, at The PHATter Sports Bar & Restaurant (1055 Mainland St, Vancouver) in conjunction with Jeff Schwarz, The Liquidator are holding a fundraiser and auction on Sunday, May 26 from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. All food and drinks are by donation and all money raised will go directly to the team.

There will be lots of great food – great prizes and a time to see your community in action. We are hoping to raise enough for the team to buy new uniforms.

On the day of the BMO Vancouver Marathon meet your friends and community neighbours Starbucks and then head on out to cheer on the runners of the BMO Vancouver Marathon.

Save the date! The 6th annual Outdoor Movie Night in Yaletown will be on August 18 at David Lam Park. 

Invite your family and friends for a fun night in the park. We will be playing a family friendly film on a giant 40 x 20 screen. Bring a blanket or folding chair, and your own flashlight. Rainout date is August 25th.

If you’re in the neighbourhood early, the Roundhouse Community Centre Picnic in the Park is happening on the same day. All the Yaletown restaurants and cafes will be open so be sure to make it dinner and a movie!

Wear Purple to show you care!

The Purple Day is a day to call attention to epilepsy. The “Purple day for Epilepsy” campaign was created by Cassidy Megan in 2008, with the goal to get people talking and informed about epilepsy. March 26 is now officially recognized for epilepsy awareness in Canada.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a condition of the brain that is characterized by recurrent seizures. It’s not a psychological disorder nor a disease. Epilepsy is not contagious.

The brain is made up of billions of nerve cells or neurons that communicate through electrical and chemical signals. When there is a sudden excessive electrical discharge that disrupts the normal activity of the nerve cells, a seizure may result. Epilepsy is a seizure disorder.
