Why did you start your business in Yaletown?
I moved to Yaletown 10 years ago from South Granville as I predicted Yaletown would be a great community and thriving city area to have a commercial art gallery. It has proven as such with it drawing tourists and Vancouervites.
What is your favourite part of your job?
What I enjoy the most is when someone new discovers my gallery for the first tiime and finds an art work that they are thrilled with owning. Equally, it is the long standing relationships I have formed with each of my 25 artists, who are mostly residing from across Canada, Europe and the USA. They love coming to Vancouver for their solo shows. I enjoy seeing changes and new directions in their art as do the followers of my artists. I am celebrating 20 years in business this year and 10 have been in Yaletown.
Complete the following sentence:
“What really makes us unique is…”
A focused interest right now is offering a variety of indoor and outdoor wall and floor mounted sculpture which is not typical in this city. I have four sculpture artists who are unique in their approach to wood, steel aluminum and zinc. Also, my selection of abstraction or abstracted landscape in both photography and painting is another strong area of aesthetics my gallery offers. And, myself and my staff are always welcoming to visitors and clients.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about opening their own business?
I would say to get professional advice from a lawyer, an accountant, your banker, but in the end stay strong to your conviction and believe in yourself everyday. Do not listen to people who say you can or can’t do it. Focus on the first three years.
